Great Value Strawberry Pastries vs. Kellogg's Pop Tarts.
Today we're going to compare Great Value strawberry pastries and Kellogg's Pop Tarts. They are very similar products, but there are a few noticeable differences...
Nutrition-
Both brands contain 200 calories per serving (one pastry). In fact, they are almost identical as far as nutrition with two exceptions. The Great Value brand has 2 grams of vs. 1.5 grams of saturated fat in the Kellogg Pop Tarts. In contrast the Kellogg brand has 170 mg of sodium vs 140 mg in the Great Value brand. All things considered, the tiny differences aren't deal breakers.
Aesthetics-
Again, very similar. The above picture shows that the Great value is a bit thicker, but the Pop Tart is a little wider/taller.
Taste-
This is the most important category and neither disappoint. The Great Value brand is a little floury, and the strawberry filling is more sweet than tart. The Pop Tarts are well, more tart. Also, they have a more substantial taste. Considering that, they would probably be the preferred pastry to put into the toaster.
Price-
Pop-tarts - $2.12 (6 pack, no tax)
Great Value - $1.32 (6 pack, no tax)
The price difference is really what separates the two. Eighty cents may not seem like a lot, but as we all know, it adds up.
Conclusion-
These virtually identical pastries are both satisfying anytime treats. However, considering the price point of both brands the Great Value is the winner here.

May I just say what a comfort to uncover somebody that really knows what they're discussing on the internet. You actually realize how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More people must look at this and understand this side of your story. I can't believe you are not

Great post. Sadly its just the only one.
ReplyDeleteHorrible. There are huge differences in the content of the two. Look at the ingredients, why does the Great Value taste different? BC they use Pears in their strawberry filler bc it's cheaper, and idiots can't tell the difference. I know what Strawberries taste like, and when I buy strawberries I want strawberries. Not Pears.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you expect when you buy Walmart's variant of Pop-Tarts? Crappy quality and fake fillings unlike Kellogg's they actually care about the food you eat and Walmart? Just the sales.
ReplyDeleteI actually like the store brand pop tarts better than kelloggs. I think the kelloggs are very dry. While I haven't tried the great value brand, I do like stop and shops brand. They look identical to the great value pop tarts actually. You can tell the difference between kelloggs and the store brand. Its subtle but you can tell. Even if kelloggs were the same price as the no frills, I would continue to buy the no frills brand. No me it just tastes so much better.
ReplyDeleteI actually found this blog by searching "why name brand Pop Tarts taste so bad". I agree with you and take it a step farther. My wife sometimes buys name brand tarts when she has some good coupons. Then I try and find a nice way of again reminding her I hate those things. Next time you have the unfortunate task of eating a blueberry name brand tart, tell me it doesn't taste like black licorice. If not, then my taste buds are broken.
DeleteI prefer the store brands over Kellogg, better flavor
ReplyDeleteSomeone said kelloggs cares about ehat they make and not sales LMAOOOOOO idiots no wonder you commented anon
ReplyDeleteKellogg pop tarts are crumbly as fuck compared to off brands.
